Wards in the City are reducing and we'll be electing new alders starting with our March Municipal Primary and then our April Municipal Election,

Find your ward and precinct. Go here https://www.stlouis-mo.gov/data/address-Search/index.cfm and type in street number and street name (omit st, av, etc.), The property listing from the City database will be returned. At the top of the screen will be Basic Information. Look for "Ward/Precinct (As of 4/5/2023)" and read across for the Ward and Precinct number associated with the property.

All of Southampton (perimeter boundaries are Chippewa to the north--south side only; Eichelberger to the south--north side only; Kingshighway to the east--west side only; and Hampton to the west--east side only) will be in Ward 5.

Find out in a SNA-hosted "Better Understanding" Event. A panel of 4 speakers will tell us what the City is doing under the Mayor's initiative for sustained criminal justice reform and then the panel will focus on juveniles in our justice system and what alternatives there are to secure detention.

Mayor Krewson starts us off at 7:30 with broad City updates. Panel discussion starts at 8:00 PM with an overview and goals and then the juvenile justice system and alternatives to secure detention. You'll even find out ways organizations and individuals can help. Audience questions begin at 8:30 PM and we'll close at 9:00 PM. Agenda

Holiday Safety Tips for Crime Prevention

The holidays are approaching and, every year, we see an increase in street robberies from now through Christmas. Now, more than ever, is the time to be aware of your surroundings and take steps to reduce your chances of becoming a robbery victim...

Always look around and know what is happening in your vicinity, whether you are walking or driving. Be aware of your surroundings

When walking, walk with a purpose. Don’t give the impression that you are wandering aimlessly or not paying attention. Walk like you have somewhere to get and you don’t have time to stop for anyone.

When walking, make eye contact with everyone that you pass. That lets them know that you have noticed them and can probably describe them, so if they have criminal intentions, they are likely to wait for the next “victim.”

Don’t get lost looking at your phone or carrying on a conversation. It’s best not to have ear buds in that will keep you from hearing what is happening around you.

When driving, leave space between your car and the car in front of you when at a stop light or stopped in traffic. If you must accelerate quickly you don’t want to be boxed in by stopping too close to the car in front of you.

When driving and almost home, call ahead and have someone meet you outside and at least watch you park and go in the house.

When approaching your residence or garage pay attention to people in the area. Especially when driving up an alley to park in your garage. If you see anyone, drive past your garage and go around the block. If they are still there when you return call 9-1-1.

Make sure your front/rear yards are well lighted as well as the area behind your garage. Motion lights in hallways are also a beneficial tool.

If approached by a robber, the best advice is still to do what they say, except NEVER get into a car with them. Give them the property they ask for. This is the best chance to escape unharmed.

NEVER get into a car with a robber. Fight in any way that you can… kick, bite, punch, grab, pull, scratch, scream, shout, etc. Use your keys as a weapon by holding them in the palm of your hand so the key blades are facing outward and punch toward the eyes. Use pepper spray if you have it. Use your firearm, just be careful so that the robber doesn’t try to disarm you and turn the weapon on you.

Do NOT leave valuables in open view in your car. Put them in the trunk or take them along with you. This is the time of the year when thieves do their own form of "window shopping." They look in parked cars for gifts and other merchandise, and they will break through car windows to get at such valuables. It takes only a few seconds for a criminal to break into your car. So, remember when you leave your car, leave it empty.

Don't advertise expensive toys, electronics, or other gifts received by the boxes left for garbage collections. Compress large boxes and place them in black garbage bags for pick-up.

Examining City/County Merger Again....

If a plan is presented, it will need to go to the voters for approval--one of the fatal flaws in the recent Better Together plan according to area voters.

The Municipal League of Metro St. Louis turned in the final signatures Monday to kick off what’s known as the Board of Freeholders. That 19-person body will have a year to present St. Louis and St. Louis County voters with a city-county merger plan.

Avalon Lot on Kingshighway Sold!

The lot where the Avalon Theater stood on Kingshighway has been sold! Local real estate company--Garcia Properties--is the new owner. There are no plans yet for development....please stay patient as these plans normally take months....and sometimes longer.

This is certainly good news for the Kingshighway Corridor on the eastern border of the Southampton Neighborhood.

Leaf PickUp in Southampton

Leaf Pickup through December 31

Leaf pickup will occur in conjunction with regularly scheduled street cleaning days in Southampton. The Southampton schedule is over two days--last Monday and last Tuesday in November and December. Mark your calendars for November 26 and 27 and December 31. (Will be updated when we uncover how December 25 (last Tuesday) will be handled.)

Here are a few helpful reminders for Southampton residents from our Ward 16 Alderman, Tom Oldenburg.

if your neighborhood does not have street cleaning signs posted, you can find your street’s cleaning schedule online
the City will pick up leaves that have fallen from City trees if they are piled in the street approximately 1.5 feet from the curb
tree limbs, cardboard boxes, plastic bags, etc. must be removed from any leaves that are left for curbside pickup
other leaves from your yard should be placed in your alley’s yard waste dumpsters
if your yard waste dumpster is full, place leaves in paper yard waste bags and schedule them for pickup from the “tree yard” in front of your home (between the sidewalk and the street); you must call the Citizen’s Service Bureau at 314-622-4800 to request bagged leaf pickup
residents should mulch leaves with a lawn mower or mulcher before disposal to maximize the capacity of dumpsters and lawn bags

Espresso Yourself, in recognition that November is National Homeless Awareness Month, is taking up a collection of coats, mitten/gloves, scarves, hats and socks to donate to St. Patrick's Center. And that's not all! For every coat donation, these business owners will donate a $1.00.

Drop them off at Espresso Yourself, 5531 Devonshire right here in SOHA. There's a box for donations and they will even deliver them to St. Patrick's Center. Please share as widely as possible.

Notes from the October Safety Meeting

Traffic signage. All pending reports to the City have been cleared and verified. The next annual survey will begin in March. NOTE: traffic signage refers to Stop, Do Not Enter, One-Way, and the plaques All Way and Cross Traffic Does Not Stop.

Dead trees. All known dead trees have been reported to the City and removal is underway. NOTE: Two trees reported dead were not removed but were trimmed. The next survey will begin in June.

Alley & Street Lighting. Almost all lighting issues have been repaired by the City (street) or Ameren (alley). Two issues involving new lights will require additional monitoring.

Sidewalks. Annual survey is scheduled to begin in May.

Property Workshops. Christy Fry and Donna Agah are attending workshops to prevent vacant properties; to reduce any displacement; and to obtain good data on City properties that are vacant.

Residents interested in Safety are encouraged to attend the tour of the Real Time Crime Center on Saturday, November 3, beginning at 10 AM (and lasting about an hour) at 1915 Olive (Police HQ). Meter parking available.

Notes from the August Safety Meeting

The August safety meeting was well attended by neighborhood activists as we worked on public safety throughout Southampton. The latest crime report for the neighborhood was reviewed. There was no change in the primary effort to reduce larceny from motor vehicles and of parts.

A fund-raising effort to install intersection cameras connected to the Real Time Crime Center at police headquarters (and based on their recommendations) will begin soon. Two tours of the Real Time Crime Center have been scheduled so neighbors can experience how using these cameras leads to crime prevention and criminal prosecution. Members can register for both free tours now. If you're not a member check back as both tours will be opened to non-members.

Volunteers have surveyed alley lighting and street lighting, reported their findings to Ameren and to CSB, and re-visited to make sure repairs were made. A recommendation from the traffic study was taken on by Safety neighbors and Southampton traffic signage has been surveyed twice throughout the neighborhood; reported to CSB; and re-visited to ensure completion.

An innovative project suggested by a neighbor will begin a pilot stage in September. After results are evaluated, full neighborhood implementation is planned. This project is designed to encourage landlords and tenants to join with the Association and our members in making Southampton stronger and safer--a benefit to all neighbors and property owners.

If you have not been to a safety meeting, keep an eye on Events and plan to come. It's a way to meet activist neighbors and to join efforts to improve our community. We exchange ideas and develop neighborhood-wide efforts to help Southampton become stronger and safer. Join us at our October meeting. Watch for the announcement for date and time.

Traffic Improvement for Ward 14.....

Carol Howard, Ward 14 alderman, has an interesting bit in her latest 14th Ward News: In 2016 a traffic study was conducted in Southampton. There were a few recommendations for the 14th Ward portion of the neighborhood, specifically at Brannon & Neosho to provide better flow of traffic at the intersection. Ward Capital Funds have been allocated and work is in progress. Thanks, Carol!

In a much requested change, membership terms will be automatically set by the software to one-year from the date of joining. Even better, it is easy to keep updated and current.

Our members are funding this improvement so thanks to all of you who have joined and helped us reach this milestone. We are very appreciative.

We Heard You....

The Board heard you...unfortunately at our last meeting, you did not hear us or the guest speakers. A PA system is being selected, ordered, on-site tested, and will (hopefully) be in place at our next general meeting on September 12th.
